The Playwright Residencies
Supported by Christina Smith
In July 2004 the New York Summer Play Festival (SPF) was launched, showcasing 18 emerging writers over 4 weeks all under the roof of Theatre Row on 42nd Street. The project was founded by US producer and Donmar Associate, Arielle Tepper Madover. SPF has become a landmark event in the New York calendar, unearthing major writing talent from over 1000 submissions, and offering professional productions of their plays.
Each year the Donmar Warehouse brings one or two of the SPF writers over to the Donmar for a three-week residency. Hosting a reading of their play for an invited audience, we also involve the writers in the current production process at the Donmar, absorb them in all departments, and enable them to see as much theatre and meet as many people across London theatre as possible.
