Sir John Mortimer – barrister, playwright, novelist and raconteur - takes us on a hilarious and poignant journey through his past. As he recalls his childhood, schooling, workdays and marriage, the figure of his eccentric barrister/ father looms large – a brilliant yet difficult man who loved the drama of the law courts and the solitude of his home; who adored his garden and hated visitors; whose blindness was never mentioned by his family; and whose respect and love was forever yearned for by his son.
First performed in 1970, the play is made up of a sequence of memories – lots of short scenes which overlap.
